[JIMTOF2022] SUGINO Technical Conference 2022
1. Special Seminar 10:00-
CWJP and CASF Process Development for Smoothing of Additive Manufactured and Cast Metal Parts: Aerospace, Automotive, Nuclear and Other Industrial Applications
Speaker
Affiliate Professor Mechanical Engineering, University of Washington
Boeing Senior Technical Fellow (retired)
Dr. Daniel Sanders
The University of Washington, together with several industrial & academic partners, is investigating the fatigue crack initiation resistance that can be achieved using a relatively new process for surface smoothing of metal parts. The cavitation abrasive surface finishing (CASF) process initially emerged as a means for eliminating the rough surface of additive manufactured powder bed processes, which are used for the fabrication of aircraft components.
The CASF method makes use of the fundamental technique of water jet cavitation peening (CWJP) and equipment adapted from traditional water jet cutting machines. Now, CASF is being further developed for broader manufacturing applications, such as the smoothing of complex shapes of castings built for the automotive, nuclear, aerospace and other industries.
The discussion will include a history of the process development and recent findings of test programs for both the CWJP and CASF processes.
Dr. Daniel Sanders
Affiliate Professor Mechanical Engineering, University of Washington
Boeing Senior Technical Fellow (retired)
As a Senior Technical Fellow for Boeing Research & Technology, he worked to develop innovative manufacturing & materials technologies for aerospace products using methods.
His most recent work is being carried out with other international experts to adapt cavitation water jet peening (CWJP) and cavitation abrasive surface finishing (CASF) for production use.
As a hobby, Dr. Sanders enjoys tunneling in his hard rock gold mines located in the Cascade Mountain Range of Washington State.
